Penance Is for the Weak D.C. Iannuzzi

In this sequel to City of Sinners, D.C. Iannuzzi confirms his shameless devotion to the film noir genre, weaving a tale of corrosive greed, blind ambition and ruthless retribution. Julie Vadnais, an attractive and determined young reporter, confronts the murky realms of municipal politics and organized crime in her crusade to uncover the truth. Montreal Police Detective Johnny Emory once again leads the police investigation, hurtling down a collision course with the illicit world he grew up in.

D. C. Iannuzzi is a Montreal writer and an incorrigible news and history junkie. He burst onto the literary scene in 2008 with his first novel, City of Sinners, a tale of home-grown terrorism that turned Quebec's language debate on its head. Iannuzzi is a graduate of Concordia University and, when not contemplating the darkness that lurks in men's souls, he earns his living as an investment advisor and portfolio manager. He lives in the former Ville d'Anjou on the island of Montreal with his wife and two daughters.

RANDOM THOUGHTS by Marisa De Franceschi

Random Thoughts is a collection of short prose sketches which express the often complicated feelings one may have for sons, daughters, husbands, sisters, friends, and the world at large. The sketches are sometimes lighthearted and whimsical, but they can also be poignant expressions of disappointment, disbelief, and distaste for what the writer is witness to. Although the tone may vary from piece to piece, the overwhelming drive and goal is to spotlight situations that will cause the reader to ponder what is really happening beneath the surface. The authorís priorities are to entertain but also to encourage a rethinking of our relationships with our fellow man.

Marisa De Franceschi's short stories, articles, and book reviews have appeared in various publications, including Canadian Author & Bookman, The Toronto Review, The Mystery Review, Investigating Woman, Pure Fiction, Ricordi: Things Remembered and The Dynamics of Cultural Exchange. She has twice been the recipient of the Okanagan Short Story Award. She is the author of the novel Surface Tension and the short story collection Family Matters (both with Guernica). She edited the anthology Pillars of Lace (Guernica) and the short story collection The Many Faces of Woman (River City Press).

ALMOND WINE AND FERTILITY by Licia Canton

Almond Wine and Fertility, a lyrical and moving collection of 15 stories, showcases Licia Cantonís ability to craft entire worlds out of just a few pages. Set in cities and in suburbia, in Canada and in Italy, these stories explore the subtleties, the humour and the complexity of modern life.
